Get ready, they are coming, the new Medicare cards. Starting April 2018, CMS will begin mailing new Medicare cards that include a new Medicare Number to Medicare beneficiaries. The mailings will be staggered throughout the year, with completion expected by April 2019. The biggest reason for the removal of the Social Security Number (SSN) off of Medicare cards is to fight medical identity theft for people with Medicare.
By replacing the SSN-based Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) on all Medicare cards helps to protect:
• Private health care and financial information
• Federal health care benefit and service payments
