Hospice Eligibility of Beneficiaries in a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF)

A Medicare beneficiary who resides in a skilled nursing facility (SNF) or nursing facility (NF) may elect the hospice benefit when:

  • The residential care is paid for privately by the beneficiary; or
  • The beneficiary is eligible for Medicaid and the facility is being reimbursed by Medicaid; and
  • The hospice and the facility have a written agreement under which the hospice takes full responsibility for the professional management of the beneficiary's hospice care for the terminal diagnosis, and the facility agrees to provide room and board to the beneficiary.
  • Room and board services are never covered under the Medicare hospice benefit.
