Unique Physician Identification Number (UPIN) Registry Discontinuance

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) discontinued assigning Unique Physician Identification Numbers (UPINs) on June 29, 2007.

The National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a requirement of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), and the NPI replaces the use of UPINs and other existing legacy identifiers.
