Connectivity/Secure File Transfer Protocol Procedures

Medicare sends and receives electronic data through Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP). This mode of transmission offers a faster and more reliable way of transmitting files to and from Cahaba Government Benefit Administrators®, LLC, than sending paper claims through the mail. In addition, you can verify instantaneously if your file was successfully received.

What is Secure FTP?

SFTP is one of a suite of networking protocols known collectively as TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol). TCP/IP has become the most common protocol for internetworking because of its capability to be used with almost any network operating system and equipment. Windows 2000/XP/Vista, UNIX, LINUX, MAC OS, and many other modern day operating systems come with TCP/IP built in.

SFTP allows authorized users to logon to a remote computer and browse the directory and files that are available to download. It also allows users to upload and download the files securely between the two computers.

Medicare and FTP

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) require SFTP transmissions containing Medicare data over secure lines. CMS does not approve of these SFTP transmissions over the Internet. Therefore, submitters must connect through Cahaba GBA's server to transmit claims.

If you are interested in sending claims using SFTP, please complete an EDI application. Applications are available on the forms page.

Information about our server and how to connect can be found here: File Transfer Protocol Procedures.
